After four years of research, innovation, and collaboration across Europe, the SEMPRE-BIO project is reaching the end of its journey. During this time, the project has contributed to advancing sustainable biogas and biomethane production pathways, demonstrating innovative technologies, and supporting the transition towards a more circular and climate-neutral economy.

To celebrate the project’s achievements and share its key results, we are pleased to invite you to SEMPRE-BIO’s Final Event, where project partners, industry experts, policymakers, and stakeholders will come together to discuss lessons learned, future opportunities, and the role of biogas and biomethane in Europe’s energy transition.

Event Agenda

The morning starts with what came out of the project. Over the past years we have produced biomethane from three very different wastes: the biogas from a wastewater treatment plant near Barcelona, woody prunings and branches near Bourges, and biogas from a dairy farm in West Flanders. Each site followed its own route, and a fourth strand of work looked at what to do with the CO₂ that every upgrading process leaves behind. The people who did the work will present what they obtained at each site.

The rest of the day looks outwards. The first roundtable puts several Horizon Europe biomethane projects in the same room to talk about the obstacles they ran into while building their demonstration plants. The second follows the value chain, from the operators whose plants produce the feedstock through to the gas utility that injects and sells the biomethane and the transport operator whose buses already run on it, to discuss what would need to change for biomethane to be produced at a larger scale.

For those attending in person, the afternoon ends at one of the pilot sites, where the technology described during the morning can be seen running.
